Testing AI-Driven, Mission-Critical Systems: Challenges and Best Practices from Autonomous Platforms

In this session, she will draw from her experience working on testing and quality assurance for mission-critical applications developed for autonomous marine vessels, including Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) and fully autonomous submarines, such as the Cetus project, which has recently been adopted by the Royal Navy under the name Excalibur.

Key topics I plan to cover include:
• Rigorous testing methodologies for AI-based decision systems in safety-critical environments
• Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing with real-world components and sensors
• Simulator-based testing to replicate complex mission and environmental scenarios
• Regulatory and compliance considerations for autonomous systems
• Strategies for ensuring reliability, traceability, and maintainability in AI-powered embedded systems
• Test design derived from technical documentation like SRS and BRDs for high-coverage QA
• Integration testing in containerized environments for scalable validation

Aishwarya Rokade is a Software Engineer at Marine AI, where she specializes in software testing and validation for mission-critical autonomous marine systems, including Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) and submarines. At Marine AI, she plays a pivotal role in ensuring software quality through rigorous hardware-in-the-loop testing, integration validation, and simulator-based assessments of real-world maritime scenarios.

She was actively involved in Project Cetus (later known as Excalibur), a cutting-edge autonomous submarine initiative that has since been handed over to the Royal Navy. Her responsibilities included analyzing technical documentation, managing test environments, and conducting end-to-end system testing to ensure seamless software-hardware integration.

Prior to joining Marine AI, she held key engineering roles at Capgemini and Infozzle Software Solutions, where she contributed to cloud-native API development, AWS infrastructure, and front-end optimization for enterprise clients, including Fortune 500 firms.

A graduate in Computer Engineering from the University of Mumbai, she also holds certifications in Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Java Programming. Her cross-domain expertise enables her to bring scalable, high-reliability solutions to complex environments in software development and QA for evolving Autonomous technologies.
