Testing in regulated environments doesn't require heavy-weight tools
When testing in highly regulated environments, e.g. in the medical or railway domain, consistent reporting of a/o requirements coverage and test results is not only good practice, but in several cases also mandatory. As a result, many projects opt for a heavyweight process framework and accordingly heavyweight tooling to support such a framework. These choices and/or approaches seem to contradict modern software development methods such as Agile and Scrum. And modern developer tools and often used freeware and open-source tools do not seem to meet the strict process and documentation requirements. However, the process framework defines the why and what, but the how can be implemented in many ways. Therefore, using tools that are familiar to the development team, including lightweight and/or free or open-source tools, can significantly increase the acceptance rate of the process within the team. This presentation discusses the challenges and approaches to overcome these challenges, including examples of real projects in the medical and railway domain.
